Dartmoor Crosses

On Dartmoor there are over 130 stone crosses.
Most are made of granite and some date back to the Saxon period. The types
of crosses on Dartmoor include:
- Wayside crosses, to mark tracks
- Village crosses, a focal point for
preaching and proclamations
- Churchyard crosses (for example Widecombe
Church Crosses)
- Boundary crosses, to mark boundaries of
land
- Market crosses, a focal point for fairs
and proclamations
- Memorial crosses, in memory of particular
people
