Dartmoor was formed about 300 million years ago when magma intruded into the Earth’s crust pushing through much of  Devon and Cornwall. The magma cooled to form granite, the heart of Dartmoor.

Following the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago Dartmoor became almost entirely covered by trees. The prehistoric wood called Wistmans Wood on Dartmoor is Devon's oldest woodland.

Dartmoor has a long history of tin mining. The earliest tin extraction was by taking tin from streams and river beds. The first record of tin streaming dates back to the 12th century. Tin was later extracted on Dartmoor by a form of open-cast mining and later, in the 18th century by deep mining. Tin mining on Dartmoor continued  well into the 20th century.
Crockern Tor was the meeting place of the Stannary Parliament, the congregation of local tin miners which met every once in a while during the Middle Ages. Dartmoor's tin miners were governed by Stannary Law, not English Common Law. Stannary Laws were enacted at Parliaments held at Crockern Tor.
On Dartmoor there are over 130 stone crosses. Most are made of granite and some date back to the Saxon period.
There are at least 150 Tors on Dartmoor. They were formed about 280 million years ago as the granite cooled and solidified from molten rock.
